The story behind this design

The pattern is built from a single tile turned four ways, which is how real encaustic floor tiles make a complicated field out of one mould. Teal grounds it, orange lifts it and gold picks out the joins. Laid flat on a long table the repeat lines up edge to edge, which is the closest a cloth gets to looking like a floor.
